What can we expect from Stephen King’s ‘Under the Dome’?

While I’m not a Stephen King fan per se, I don’t think there’s a novel more anticipated this year than Stephen King’s ‘Under the Dome‘ set to debut this November. Which begs the question, what do we know about this novel thus far? Well, despite being four months away from the release date we do know some things. For example, ‘Under the Dome’ promises to be Stephen King’s longest novel to date, more than double that of his current novel Duma Key and nearly 100 hundred pages longer than the first edition of The Stand.

Publishers have been very close-lipped about the details of the plot but here’s what King has revealed so far. ‘Under the Dome’ is the culmination of two rewrites King began in the 80s of a novel that was never completed. These novels were titled ‘The Cannibals’ and ‘Under the Dome’ respectively.

Below are the details concerning the plot from Stephen King’s official website:

“On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester’s Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener’s hand is severed as “the dome” comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when—or if—it will go away. Dale Barbara, Iraq vet and now a short-order cook, finds himself teamed with a few intrepid citizens—town newspaper owner Julia Shumway, a physician’s assistant at the hospital, a select-woman, and three brave kids. Against them stands Big Jim Rennie, a politician who will stop at nothing—even murder—to hold the reins of power, and his son, who is keeping a horrible secret in a dark pantry. But their main adversary is the Dome itself. Because time isn’t just short. It’s running out.”

While the novel will explore similar themes that were brought up in The Stand, King himself has stated that the two are very different novels in terms of plot and character. I’m a little more than excited for this novel, I might even do myself a favor and pick up a copy.

Robert Rodriguez to Reboot Predator

Another 80s action staple is on track to be rebooted. IESB is reporting that director Robert Rodriguez has announced plans to reboot the Arnold Schwarzenegger action film, Predator.

The director made the announcement at his Troublemaker Studios, where Texas politicians signed a reform bill to the state's film incentive program. Here's what the director said at the press conference.

"I'm going to be able to shoot my upcoming Machete here, a sci-fi action film called Nervewrackers, a re-boot of the Predator series called Predators, and a couple of smaller movies called Sin City 2 and The Jetsons."

The site also confirmed that Rodriguez was indeed directing and producing the Predators remake, and it will be his own take on the original concept.

Torchwood cut 'like punishment'

Cutting the new series of Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood to five shows from 13 felt like "we were being punished", its star John Barrowman has said.

The third series of the sci-fi show - which began on BBC Three before moving to BBC Two - will now be shown on consecutive days on BBC One.

Barrowman said other shows moved to BBC One "and they don't get cut".

The BBC said it wanted to create "a powerful sense of event" with Children of Earth, which will start on Monday.

Barrowman told the Radio Times: "I'm going to get a little political and I'll probably get into trouble for it."

He said Torchwood's first series had been "the most successful show on BBC3 - ever" and, as a result, had been moved to BBC Two where "we were beating shows that had been on BBC Two for a long time".

"The decision was made to go to BBC One and then we were cut - from 13 episodes down to five."

'Very special'

Barrowman said the new episodes were "incredible, I have no doubt about that".

"But personally, I felt like we were being punished.

"Other shows move from BBC Three and Two to One and they don't get cut.

"So why are we? It felt like every time we moved we had to prove ourselves."

But the show's writer and creator Russell T Davies told the magazine: "Part of us thought, 'we could do another 13 episodes, we've learnt how to do that, and the second series was better than the first'.

"But why not change it?"

He said if the show was made in the US, "they'd try to keep it going for seven years, doing the same thing every week".

He added: "It's the British audience we make these for.

"And I don't think audiences are remotely lost by a change in format."

A BBC spokesman said: "We wanted to create a powerful sense of event when the show came to BBC One and so talked with the show makers about a story that could run over five consecutive days."

This was something "very special" that had only been done before with 2008's five-part thriller Criminal Justice and Iraq-based drama Occupation, shown earlier this month.

Torchwood: Children Of Earth follows the alien-chasing team as they battle for the future of the human race against the fiercest force they have encountered.

j.j. Abrams Not Committed to ‘Star Trek’ Sequel

Following the success of this year’s ‘Star Trek’, it seems like a no-brainer to reunite the same creative team behind the youthful voyage on the Enterprise. Screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are already working on the script for the sequel; J.J. Abrams is still unsure about returning for another round. In an interview with collider.com, Orci and Kurtzman address the box-office success of ‘Star Trek’, the timeline for the finished script for the next ‘Star Trek’ (Christmas), along with the news that Abrams has not committed to a sequel.

Abrams, the creative mind behind successful television series Felicity, Alias and Lost, has had a good amount of experience in the movie industry, and has proven that he can produce a successful movie. If he does not return for the sequel, it might be due to a busy work schedule. If you think there is an absence of gigantic movie monsters, you’re hoping there’s a Cloverfield sequel in the planning stages. Or possbily a new television project. Most likely, Abrams schedule is largely dedicated to work on Mission: Impossible 4 or The Dark Tower. However, if you enjoyed the recent ‘Star Trek’ movie, this might be a cause for concern. Attempting to recreate the same movie-going experience with a new director could prove to be a challenge.

Which contemporary directors could meet the challenge? Maybe Christopher Nolan. Possibly Bryan Singer. Well, it might not matter if J.J. Abrams returns to direct, which is the most likely outcome. A $235 million box-office speaks loudly in the ear of a in-demand director.

Richard Pryor At The Star Wars Bar

And you thought Wuher and Bea Arthur were the only Cantina owners... In 1977, comic genius Richard Pryor made a production-deal with NBC for an evening comedy and variety show. Pryor had already done several successful specials for the station. The show starred himself, Sandra Bernhard, Robin Williams, and several other up-and-coming comedians. It was much like Saturday Night Live, with hilarious skits throughout the program. One of these skits was 'Star Wars Bar'. Richard Pryor plays the owner of the Cantina, and all the Cantina regulars are there: Hammerhead, Figrin D'an the Barquin, Ponda Baba, and many more. In fact, these were the actual costumes from the movie, used with permission from Lucasfilm.

The clip, although extremely funny, is not among Pryor's best, but it is still a must-see for Star Wars fans. The most impressive are the costumes (sadly, it's too dark to see if there are any costumes not used in the movie), but it is the idea of having Richard Pryor interact with the aliens and being in the Star Wars universe that is the funniest. Another interesting fact, I'm pretty sure that this was done before the Holiday Special, so Pryor is in fact the second owner of the Mos Eisley Cantina.

'The Richard Pryor Show' was too racy for NBC's standards, so they quit the show after only about seven or eight episodes. Despite its huge (but short) success, the show was great; but due to some of the content of the episodes, clips like 'Star Wars Bar' have been seen only rarely

Steven Spielberg is pursuing Noah Wyle to headline his untitled alien-invasion pilot for TNT, sources confirm to me exclusively.

The potential series -- which was announced last month at TNT's upfront presentation -- takes place six months after evil extra terrestrials decimate mankind. Wyle would play the leader of a ragtag group of citizens who try to bring down the aggressors.

Translation: It's Spielberg's take on V!

The gig would mark a small-screen reunion for ex-TV doc Wyle and Spielberg; the Oscar-winning director was one of ER's founding producers. It would also keep Wyle in business with TNT, the network behind his super-fun* Librarian movies.

A TNT spokesperson declined to comment.

NEW YORK, June 10, 2009 -- 20th Century Fox Television, the animation powerhouse that brought "Family Guy" back from the dead five years ago, has done it again: Matt Groening and David X. Cohen's brilliantly subversive animated sci-fi comedy "Futurama" will return to production on 26 new half-hour episodes more than six years after the series aired its last original episode. The move comes on the heels of the series' blockbuster performance on DVD and on COMEDY CENTRAL; the announcement was made today by Twentieth Century Fox Television Chairmen Gary Newman and Dana Walden, and David Bernath, senior vice president, programming for COMEDY CENTRAL.

"Futurama" was a staple of Fox's Sunday night animation block from 1999 to 2003 before ceasing production on original episodes. In June 2006, COMEDY CENTRAL acquired the rights to the existing 72 episodes of the series, which the channel began airing in January 2008, and four recently-produced extended length "Futurama" adventures: "Bender's Big Score," "The Beast with a Billion Backs," "Bender's Game" and "Into the Wild Green Yonder," which enjoyed enormous success both on COMEDY CENTRAL and in DVD release. This new deal marks the show's return to episodic series production on original episodes. "Futurama" becomes only the second series in the history of the medium to go back into production based on the strength of its DVD sales and repeat airings on cable.

The new episodes will be available in mid 2010 to be shown on COMEDY CENTRAL. Twentieth Century Fox Television retains the option to license the original runs of the new episodes to a broadcast network.

Web Series Tied to ‘Blade Runner’ Is In the Works

Here is some news that will make fans of the 1982 science-fiction cult film “Blade Runner” shudder with either anticipation or trepidation.

On Thursday the film’s director, Ridley Scott, announced that a new division of his commercials company, RSA Films, was working on a video series called “Purefold.” The series of linked 5- to 10-minute shorts, aimed first at the Web and then perhaps television, will be set at a point in time before 2019, when the Harrison Ford movie takes place in a dystopian Los Angeles.

Mr. Scott, his brother Tony and his son Luke are developing the project in conjunction with the independent studio Ag8, which is run by one of the creators of “Where are the Joneses?” a British Web sitcom that solicited storyline suggestions from the audience. Similarly, “Purefold” will harvest story input from its viewers, in conjunction with the social media site FriendFeed.

But the series won’t be hewing too closely to the specific characters or situations in “Blade Runner.” Some of that material stemmed from the Philip K. Dick novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” which the “Purefold” creators do not have rights to.

“We don’t take any of the canon or copyrighted assets from the movie,” said David Bausola, founding partner of Ag8, who said he hoped the series would debut later this summer and that the first episodes would depict events about two years into the future. “It’s actually based on the same themes as ‘Blade Runner.’ It’s the search for what it means to be human and understanding the notion of empathy. We are inspired by ‘Blade Runner.’”

Other partners in the project include the ad and marketing agencies WPP, Publicis, Aegis Media and Naked Communications. They will bring in advertisers whose products and brands — or hypothetical future versions of them — could be featured in the series.

In an indication that the filmmakers are interested in exploring a new kind of collective, social creativity, the episodes in the series will be released under a Creative Commons license, marking the first time a major Hollywood director has embraced that alternative licensing scheme. The license means fans of the series can take the episodes and remix or otherwise repurpose them, and even make their versions available commercially under the same license.

New 'Doctor Who' companion announced

21-year-old Karen Gillan has been named as the new companion for series five of Doctor Who.

The Scottish actress will star alongside Matt Smith, who takes over from David Tennant as The Doctor in series five of the long-running cult show.

"I am absolutely over the moon at being chosen to play the Doctor's new companion," said Gillan. "The show is such a massive phenomenon that I can't quite believe I am going to be a part of it. Matt Smith is an incredible actor and it is going to be so much fun to act alongside him – I just can't wait to get started!"

Gillan previously appeared in Who as a soothsayer in the series four episode 'The Fires of Pompeii'. Her other credits include The Kevin Bishop Show, Rebus and Stacked.

Of Gillan's casting, new executive producer Steven Moffat said: "We saw some amazing actresses for this part, but when Karen came through the door the game was up. Funny, and clever, and gorgeous, and sexy. Or Scottish, which is the quick way of saying it. A generation of little girls will want to be her. And a generation of little boys will want them to be her too."

Rumoured contenders for the role of Matt Smith's assistant had included Lily Allen, Kelly Brook, Georgia Moffett and Skins star Hannah Murray.

Filming on the new series will begin in July for transmission around Easter 2010. Tennant's final episodes will air this Christmas.

'Doctor Who' returns to BBC America

At BBC America, the Doctor is finally in. The net has acquired the five "Doctor Who" specials that will finish showrunner Russell T. Davies' run on the venerable Brit sci-fi franchise that starred David Tennant as the Doctor.

"The Next Doctor," the series' Christmas special, will air at 9 p.m. June 27, and the next spec ("Planet of the Dead") is set for July. Dates and times for the final three shows are to be determined, but the next incarnation of the show is already in the works, with Steven Moffat (who worked on the Davies version) as showrunner and thesp Matt Smith as the Doctor.

"Doctor Who" has aired on Sci Fi for four seasons, with BBC America preeming Davies' spinoff series "Torchwood" (which will continue) and running the parent show a season late. "Torchwood" will air as a five-episode cycle this year, as well, starting in July.

Due to a quirky international sales arrangement, BBC America will continue to air the U.S. preems of ITV's dinosaur-filled sci-fi adventure series "Primeval" -- "Doctor Who's" chief ratings rival in the U.K., recently optioned for a bigscreen feature by Warners.

The net's "Who"-centric summertime launches will segue into the rest of its sci-fi heavy lineup, which includes the previously announced fantasy series "Being Human" (six hourlongs, produced by Touchpaper TV and BBC America, starting July 25) about the relationships among three characters: a vampire, a werewolf and a ghost. The net has already made a deal for the not-yet-aired second season of the show.

Also on the sked: "Survivors," which follows the last members of the human race after a deadly virus has wiped out 99% of the population.

BBC America doesn't have a traditional upfront -- the net acquires comparatively short seasons of Brit programs and airs them year-round, sometimes combining them to make a U.S.-length season. Because of the way BBC Worldwide is funded, BBC America has to outbid any interested Stateside nets, even for programming that appears on its sister network in the U.K. The unique structure has occasionally resulted in a success story for BBC America that has turned into a success story for another net when the time came to renew the show.

For "Doctor Who," the reverse would appear to be true. The net has back a quintessentially British show that BBC Worldwide America prexy Garth Ancier wishes had always been on BBC America (he came onboard after the deal was made).

"If I'd been here," Ancier said, "we wouldn't have sold it, to be quite honest."

'Alien' Remake, Reboot, Whatever - Just a Bad Idea

You've got to have a giant set of balls to remake Alien. In terms of genre movies, setting your sights on Alien is like remaking Snow White or Casablanca or Annie Hall. Alien really is that good and that important in its genre. So is the sequel. So maybe Fox recognizes that and is focusing instead on some kind of origin story. That's what Bloody Disgusting is reporting today.

I'm a little confused as to what an origin story would be, though. Would it concentrate on the evolution of the alien race? Would it be the crew of the Nostromo earlier in their mission? And if it's Option B, why the hell would you make that movie without the Alien, thus avoiding the remake tag? Or how could you make an Alien-free origin story without the intention of getting around to it someday? Could any of this sound like a worse idea?

The rumor is that Ridley and Tony Scott are locked in to produce and that it will be a journey of the Nostromo crew, meaning a new Ripley and a new Alien presence. So, if the sources are to be believed, this is a remake no matter what else they stack on top of it.

Who would direct? Not Ridley Scott. Not Tony Scott. Not anyone you've probably heard of, in fact. The name being linked to the project is Carl Rinsch, a commercial and music video director. There's a long history of filmmakers emerging from those fields, so it's not that I mind Rinsch getting called up to the big leagues, but I think I'd mind anybody remaking Alien.

Here's a solution for Fox, and see what you think about it: Just digitally restore and re-release Alien. Give it a healthy distribution in a 1,500 - 2,000 theaters. My precedent for this is The Exorcist, another movie that would not be enhanced through a remake. The director's cut was released in 2000 and made $40 million, opening in second place despite only playing in several hundred theaters.

Fox would please purists and introduce the film to new audiences as well, which is presumably the point of remaking it. And it would cost much, much less, bringing the studio and the producers a greater return on a movie that realistically can't be improved upon.

And then, six months later, do the same thing with Aliens.

So a franchise just might be dead. With the critical failure of Terminator Salvation we might just not see another bad-ass robot trying to kill those pesky little humans. But it was a fun ride filled with catch phrases and bad makeup. Do you know all there is to know about the Terminator films? I did some research on IMDB and found out some things you just might not know about the Terminator movies.

(The Terminator) O.J. Simpson was considered for the role of the Terminator, but the producers feared he was "too nice" to be taken seriously as a cold-blooded killer. (If they only knew).

(The Terminator) Mel Gibson and Sylvester Stallone both turned down the role of the Terminator.

(The Terminator) Lance Henriksen was originally considered for the role of The Terminator. Writer/director James Cameron even made early sketches showing The Terminator looking like Henriksen. The original concept was for the character to be able to blend into a crowd. Cameron approached Arnold Schwarzenegger and wanted him to play the role of Kyle Reese, but after their meeting, Schwarzenegger and Cameron both wanted Schwarzenegger to play the title role, so Henriksen was cast in the role of Det. Vukovich. Curiously, Henriksen later got to play the part of a humanoid cyborg when he played Bishop in Aliens, also directed by Cameron.

(The Terminator) In the final auditions, Linda Hamilton beat Geena Davis and Rosanna Arquette for the role of Sarah.

In an AOL chat, Lawless explained: "Probably the biggest regret that I have, though I didn't turn it down, was a part in Terminator 2 that Robert Patrick got. (Terminator Salvation) Helena Bonham Carter replaced Tilda Swinton shortly before filming was set to begin. She filmed her role in 10 days.

With the success of the new Battlestar Galactica and excitement of the upcoming V series, you'd have to think Hollywood is going loco over what series to make next. Well, I can answer that question right now. Here are 6 science fiction televisions shows you better be remaking immediately.

6. Space 1999 - After Gerry Nation's Thunderbirds proved a success across the world and especially in America his next live action drama featured a cast of English and American stars in the popular science fiction offering Space 1999. In 1999 (then many years away) a team of scientists on a moon base are experimenting when a massive explosion causes the moon to swing out of the Earth's orbit and travel continuously through the galaxy, leaving ours and entering others. Led by Commander John Keonig (Martin Landau) each new show allowed the space adventurers to meet new alien life forms, most of which were bad. There was a massive illusion that surrounded Space 1999 and that was that people assumed that it went on for longer than it did, with shows being screened for years despite the fact that only two series featuring 48 episodes were ever made. If course they'd have to change the name... but I smell awesomeness.

5. Buck Rogers in the 25th Century - American science fiction adventure television series produced by Universal Studios. The series was developed by Glen A. Larson and ran for two seasons, from 1979 - 1981. The feature-length pilot episode for the series was released theatrically several months before the series aired. The series centered on Captain William Anthony "Buck" Rogers, played by Gil Gerard, a NASA pilot who commands Ranger 3, a space shuttle that is launched in May 1987. Due to a life support malfunction, Buck is accidentally frozen for 504 years before the derelict spacecraft is discovered in the year 2491. The combination of gases that froze his body coincidentally comes close to the formula commonly used in the 25th Century for cryopreservation, and his rescuers are able to revive him. He learns that the Earth was rebuilt following a devastating nuclear war on November 22, 1987, and is now under the protection of the Earth Defense Directorate.

4. Earth 2 - A short-lived science fiction television series which aired on NBC from November 6, 1994 to June 4, 1995.The show was canceled after one season of 22 episodes. It followed the journey and settlement of a small expeditionary group called the Eden Project, with the intent to journey to an Earth-like planet called G889 in an attempt to find a cure to an illness called the Syndrome. No clue why it didn't run longer but with a little love this should could be amazing (think LOST on another planet)

3. My Favorite Martian - A human-looking extraterrestrial in a one-man spaceship crash-lands near Los Angeles. The ship's pilot is, in fact, an anthropologist from Mars and is now stranded on Earth. Tim O'Hara, a young newspaper reporter for The Los Angeles Sun, is on his way home from Edwards Air Force Base (where he had gone to report on the flight of the X-15) back to Los Angeles when he spots the spaceship coming down. Imagine if they took out the campy jokes and replaced it with a little action? This should today could be amazing.

2. Greatest American Hero - An average school teacher, Ralph Hinkley (played by William Katt), and an aging FBI agent, William "Bill" Maxwell (Robert Culp), are approached by aliens who give Hinkley a super suit. When worn, the suit will allow Hinkley to have super human powers and help mankind. The one problem, Hinkley loses the directions. This classic ran from 1981 to 1983 and also featured a young and lovely Connie Selleca, who played Hinkley's girlfriend then wife, Pam Davidson Hinkley. It was beat up horribly by bad writing and green screen FX, if a little money was put behind this show today it could rule the world.

1. Alien Nation - Alien slaves, bred to be super intelligent and strong, crash on Earth. These "Newcomers" are assimilated into society. The show focused on one of them, George Francisco, who becomes a police detective partnered with a human cop, Matthew Sikes. They fight crime, learn to respect each other's cultures, and fight the new bigotry between humans and aliens. Already a proven theater and television success, and with the new love of Sci Fi... I would have to think someone was already working on this one. DO IT!

BBC Developing a 'Dr. Who' Movie

We might get a Dr. Who movie, and very likely, it would star David Tennant, the actor who really helped resurrect the series on the BBC in the past few years. Tennant recently filmed his final episodes of the series, and Matt Smith will take over the role for the next official season. But it could be that a movie was part of Tennant's thinking all along.

The BBC (via Filmonic) reports that, "Tennant will firstly appear in three [Dr. Who] specials, starting with The Waters of Mars in November. Meanwhile, Doctor Who may be heading for the big screen after a spokeswoman for BBC Films confirmed that “a script is in development”.

Now, that doesn't mean a movie will definitely happen or that Tennant will star. It could be Smith, I suppose. But this series doesn't have a concrete timeline, where stuff that happened when Tom Baker was the Doctor in residence has anything to do with what Tennant encountered. So that means, a movie franchise could live independently of the TV series.

And if you look at it from the Beeb's perspective, if you're going to launch the first Dr. Who movie in over 30 years, you would probably want to use arguably the best guy to play the character rather than an upstart who is really an unknown quantity.

There's no question the prospects are better now for a movie than they have been in a long time, and there's no question that the film is decidely a more interesting proposition with Tennant in the TARDIS.

Joss Whedon Left Out Of New BUFFY Movie

The team that holds the rights to "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" said it hasn't reached out to Joss Whedon as it prepares to make a new "Buffy" movie.

Whedon wrote the 1992 film that started the iconic supernatural franchise. He also created and produced the critically acclaimed TV series that ran for seven seasons afterward, writing and directing many of the show's episodes.

The Hollywood Reporter said Roy Lee and Doug Davison of Vertigo Entertainment are working with the original movie's director, Fran Rubel Kuzui, and her husband, Kaz Kuzui, on a remake, which doesn't include Whedon.

Kuzui and her Kuzui Enterprises have always owned the rights to "Buffy." Kuzui also served as executive producer on the TV show, which wrapped in 2003, and its spin-off "Angel," which ended its five-season run in 2004.

Both the "Buffy" and "Angel" sagas have since continued via popular comic books that Whedon oversees.

The Hollywood Reporter said the upcoming film is a new adventure and would have no connection to the TV series.

The movie also is not expected to include appearances by popular supporting characters from the show such as Angel, Willow, Xander or Spike, the entertainment industry trade newspaper said.

Fox Confirms 'Terminator' Canceled

Terminator 6 On the eve of the theatrical release of the big budget "Terminator: Salvation," Fox confirmed the TV series "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" has been, well, terminated.

"It was not an inexpensive show," explained Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly. "We had to make some choices on the night. We looked at ratings track where it had a consistent run. And that trend line was not pointing in the right direction. We make no apologies for that show -- we did a huge launch with that show. We tried. It was time to move on ... Ultimately we bet on 'Dollhouse.'"

"Terminator" topped several fan polls when viewers were asked which show at risk of cancellation they'd most like to save. Though at-risk fellow fan favorites "Chuck" and "Dollhouse" were rescued from the network axe, not so "TSCC."

Fox was less inclined to bring back "Terminator" over "Dollhouse" partly because the first show is produced by Warner Bros and the second by the network's sister studio, 20th TV

'Star Trek' Sequel Will Deal With 'Unpredictable Future'

When J.J. Abrams and his team first signed on to resurrect "Star Trek," Hollywood insiders questioned whether sci-fi fans still cared about the franchise. After a $76.5 million opening this past weekend the previous franchise record-holder was "First Contact" with a mere $30 million — you can consider "Trek" successfully rebooted. And as you read this, a whole new series of sequels are being planned for this new alternate reality.

"One of the obstacles that we found ourselves butting up against [when we took on the job] was this idea that we already knew the fate of the characters," writer/producer Alex Kurtzman told us of the newly established parallel "Trek" dimension, forever altered by the reckless actions of time-travelling villain Nero (Eric Bana). "If you're going to bring a whole new iteration of 'Trek' to life, you could never put them in any real danger — because you already know how they either died or lived. So, we felt like, all right, we have to find a way to make the future unpredictable, so whenever they're in these difficult, treacherous situations there truly is the risk of death."

Word already leaked more than a month ago that at least one "Trek" sequel is in the works, and the series' gatekeepers confirmed to us that such memorable characters as Khan Noonien Singh and Dr. Tolian Soran are among the many characters whose life courses may have been altered by the events of the new film.

"All the characters who existed in the universe or canon we grew up with are essentially still around in some capacity," Kurtzman explained. "But their lives have been altered, so they may again intersect with our crew."

"There's a deal in place with the writers and the actors," Abrams said recently of "Trek" sequel plans, explaining that all the key actors are under contract to return. "If people like this movie, and there's a demand for another one, we would be happy to work on it."

Well, they certainly did — and Kurtzman and his writing partner Roberto Orci (who also collaborated on the upcoming "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen") told us that their minds are already swimming with sequel possibilities.

"I don't think we ever need to talk about time travel again," Orci explained, saying that Leonard Nimoy and other "original universe" cast members will likely be unnecessary from here on out. "In fact, in the end of the movie, the device that allows time travel is destroyed. So we're stuck with this universe we're in now."

"Now we're in this new world," Kurtzman agreed. "And we're just gonna have to live through the unpredictable future."

As for ideas in that universe, Orci explained: "We've had a couple of really preliminary conversations, but we really didn't want to [get ahead of ourselves], because this isn't something we invented. We wanted to see what fans think of the first one; let's see what works, and what people think is the best in what we've done. And then we can take that into account when we think about the next movie."

Asked how soon they'd start writing the "Trek" sequel if the first one is announced as a hit the Monday after opening weekend, Orci said: "That day."

"I'm already going back and reading some of the books I've missed," he said of "Trek" tales and fan-fiction that have been written in past years, which could be reinterpreted for their new universe. "I'm trying to read every 'Star Trek' book I can get my hands on. We did that a lot for the first movie. ... I'm starting to re-immerse myself again in what's come before."

ABC Picks Up "Flash Forward" Drama

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - ABC has officially picked up "Flash Forward," a drama starring Joseph Fiennes.

The show, which already is being promoted on the network, received a 13-episode order Friday night.

Based on Robert J. Sawyer's novel, the series chronicles the aftermath of a global event in which everyone in the world blacks out for 2 minutes, 17 seconds and has mysterious visions of six months into the future.

Originally developed at HBO, which retains a piece of any profits, "Flash" landed at ABC after heated bidding with Fox. From the get-go, it has been considered compatible with the network's hit "Lost" and a potential successor to the mystery drama, which is heading into its sixth and final season.

Not surprisingly, ABC two weeks ago launched a teaser promo campaign for "Flash" during "Lost." The new series is expected to launch in the fall.

ABC has been the most aggressive among the broadcast networks this year in handing out early series pickups to its strongest pilots.

The order for "Flash" came hours after the network brass screened it to a strong reception. It follows ABC's Thursday pickup of the new comedy "Modern Family."

In addition to Fiennes, the "Flash" cast includes Sonya Walger, John Cho, Jack Davenport, Brian F. O'Byrne, Courtney B. Vance, Christine Woods, Zachary Knighton and Peyton List.

With ABC's pilot screenings slated to wrap Monday, other hot prospects at the network include the mystery drama "Happy Town" and prolific producer Jerry Bruckheimer's "The Unknown," both enjoying rave reviews. Also going strong are the Courteney Cox-starring comedy "Cougar Town" and the contemporary witch take "Eastwick."

"V," an update of the 1980s miniseries, is heading into its Monday screening with a strong buzz, with the dramas "Empire State" and "Limelight" also in contention.

On the comedy side, the Patricia Heaton vehicle "The Middle," which was filmed months ago, is picking up heat after a solid screening.

Three other pilots have the strong presence of stars going for them: Alyssa Milano ("Romantically Challenged"), Kelsey Grammer (an untitled project) and Cedric the Entertainer ("The Law").

Star Trek Coming Back To Television?

Bryan Fuller, creator of the TV show Pushing Daisies and a former Star Trek writer and producer, is pushing for a new Star Trek TV series. The new Star Trek TV show would be based on "old style" Star Trek, rather than the more recent incarnations and variations: Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise and Star Trek: The Next Generation. There hasn't been a Star Trek TV series since Enterprise was cancelled after four seasons in 2005.

In an interview with iF Magazine about Pushing Daisies, Fuller said:

"I told my agent and told the people of J.J. Abrams' team I want to create another Star Trek series and have an idea that I’m kicking around. I would love to return to the spirit of the old series with the colours and attitude. I loved Voyager and Deep Space Nine, but they seem to have lost the ‘60s fun and I would love to take it back to its origin."

Previously, talking to MTV, Fuller talked about his ambition to resurrect Star Trek on TV and why he thought it had grown stale.

"Somehow, it got cold over the years. I love Next Generation, but it’s a little cooler and calmer than the ones from the ‘60s, which were so dynamic and passionate. Deep Space Nine was the best of the modern ones, because it was so emotionally complicated. Enterprise was the most sterile of all of them, when it should have been the most fun. Star Trek has to recreate itself. Otherwise, all the characters start to feel the same. You always have a captain, a doctor, a security officer, and you have the same arguments based on those perspectives. It starts to feel too familiar. So all those paradigms where it takes place on a starship have to be shaken up."

Fuller wrote twenty one Star Trek episodes over four years, two in Deep Space Nine's final season, and the rest for Voyager. He also produced Voyager's last season.

I would love to see a new Star Trek TV show, especially a good one. While I like some of Star Trek: The Next Generation with Patrick Stewart, and the occasional episode of Deep Space Nine, a lot of the recent Star Trek didn't impress me at all.

Perhaps J.J. Abrams can take over the franchise if his upcoming reboot is successful. A Star Trek TV show with the style and impact of Fringe or Lost would be excellent. Although hopefully it would be a lot less confusing than Lost.

Nestled within J.J. Abrams' new Star Trek movie is a standard Hollywood torture scene. Nero, the Romulan antagonist, straps Capt. Pike of the Enterprise to a futuristic hospital gurney and demands secret defense codes. Naturally, Pike refuses. So—in a nod to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan—Nero forces a mind-control insect down the captain's throat as he stoically recites his name, rank, and serial number. Torture, here, is routine—not an ethical atrocity but an item on the blockbuster checklist—and predictable: The captain has the information his interrogator needs, but, as long as he's in his right mind, he's able to resist divulging it.

Bale stars in the Terminator Salvation, the upcoming installment of the Terminator franchise and explains that the Terminator is very different from the movies Schwarzenegger starred in. He said to Total Film:

“‘Terminator 2′ is the original nightmare of just being pursued that everyone has, by somebody who just will not stop, never stops, doesn’t give up. When you’ve got someone who looked like Schwarzenegger coming after you it made a big difference but nowadays, it wouldn’t really - we’ve seen so many guys who imitated him and it just became a little passe. [The franchise doesn't need him now] because you can’t just keep re-hashing the same plot. Yes, ‘Terminator’ is known for having this one singular figure of villainy that is constantly pursuing but how many times can you keep on doing it?”

He added:

“I don’t think anyone really had an interest in just imitating the movies that had come before. There was a realization of ‘Look, the mythology is dead unless we reinvent something, put it in a different world, recreate completely.” So obviously that’ll be the big question for a lot of people. Why don’t you have that single figure of villainy coming after you? But I think if we had it would have been same old, same old and why bother?”

I get what Bale is saying, but his words come out so harsh. He should be more careful about how to promote his upcoming movies.

FOX has renewed FRINGE, the No. 1 new series among Adults 18-49, with a full second season, it was announced today by Kevin Reilly, President, Entertainment for Fox Broadcasting Company.

“FRINGE proved to be a notable addition to our schedule all season and it really has fans buzzing as it builds to a fantastic season finale,” said Reilly. “J.J. and the whole Bad Robot team have been phenomenal partners, and we look forward to years of making great television with them.”

FRINGE has captivated audiences this season, winning its Tuesday time period weekly among key demographics and ranks as the No. 1 new series in primetime among Adults 18-49.

Questions will be answered when the first season of FRINGE wraps up with two all-new episodes. First, on Tuesday, May 5 (9:01-10:00 PM ET/PT), Olivia experiences “awake dreams,” Walter divulges key information about the Z.F.T. manifesto and Peter reveals a secret that yields unexpected results in a disturbing case. In the climactic finale airing Tuesday, May 12 (9:04-10:00 PM ET/PT), discoveries are made, loyalties are tested, otherworldly origins are discovered and guest star Leonard Nimoy debuts as a pivotal person of interest.

30 Things You Didn't Know About "Battlestar Galactica"

30. Despite improvising the story in ten episode arcs, Ronald D. Moore and David Eick always intended for the characters to reach Earth in the final episode, albeit thousands of years before the present day. They also conceived the epilogue with "Fantasy" Six and Baltar discussing the fate of humanity in Times Square very early on, to make the fate of humanity ambiguous.

29. The concept of the "Final Five" Cylons came about from the writers wanting to depict Baltar living on a Cylon baseship. Since the identity of only seven Cylons had been revealed up to that time, Ronald D. Moore came up with the idea of the remaining five as sacred beings, and selected the four characters - Tigh, Tyroll, Tory Foster, and Anders - who would be revealed at the end of the third season. Moore also selected the identity of the Final Cylon as Ellen Tigh, and informed only Kate Vernon of his decision. Vernon and Moore had to keep the secret from the cast and much of the crew for nearly two years before shooting the episode which would reveal her identity.

28. Cavil's suicide in the series finale was suggested by Dean Stockwell. In the script, Col. Tigh (Michael Hogan) was supposed to kill Cavil during the final battle. Stockwell, however, said he thought the character would shoot himself, realizing that his Cylon faction had lost the war. Writer Ronald D. Moore and director Michael Rymer agreed.

27. Paper in the series have corners cut off. It is said that director Michael Rymer did this during the miniseries as a reference to how he had to "cut corners" financially to make the miniseries work on a limited budget.

26. Starbuck, who is played by Katee Sackhoff, was a man in the original "Battlestar Galactica" (1978) show, played by Dirk Benedict. It's also the name of the first officer aboard the Pequod in the book Moby Dick.

Moore and David Eick made a written plea to fans to stop downloading episodes and wait for them to air in the United States and Canada.

21. The Battlestar Galactica and the Viper fighters are similar in design to the old show, but were revamped for the new show. The Cylon Basetar, Cylon Raider, and Cylon Centurion each had a completely new design for the new show. Also, there are only four ships that appear in the remake but not in the original: "Colonial One" (the transport used by Laura Roslin), the Olympic Carrier, Cloud 9 and the ringed passenger liner.

20. Commander Adama has a shaving mirror in his cabin. This mirror is made by IKEA, and is a model called "Fräck". This word is similar to "frak" which is the primary vulgarity in the Battlestar Galactica universe.

19. The rank structure for the officers serving in the Colonial Fleet are as follows: OFFICERS: Admiral, Commander, Colonel, Major, Captain, Lieutenant, Lieutenant (junior grade), Ensign. ENLISTED: Master Chief Petty Officer, Chief Petty Officer, Petty Officer (1st, 2nd Class), Specialist, Deck Hand, Recruit. There are also Marines aboard Galactica which conform more closely to the traditional enlisted Marine ranks, with Sergeants, Sergeants-Major, etc. Unresolved is the question of whether the Marine officers would also adhere to the mixed rank structure.

18. Number Six (Tricia Helfer) was named after Patrick McGoohan's character in the television series "The Prisoner" (1967).

17. The telephone handset used on the bridge of the Galactica is a US Army issues field telephone used since the Korean War, known as the TA-1.

16. Jane Seymour was offered the role of Admiral Helena Cain. When she turned down the offer, Ronald D. Moore offered the role to Michelle Forbes and she accepted.

14. When they created the sub plot with Helo and Boomer on Caprica the creators did not know why Boomer and the Cylons were interested in Helo. It was only about half way through the first season that they decided that the Cylons were interested in biological reproduction, an issue that has become very important to the series.

11. Lucy Lawless was originally offered the role of Ellen Tigh, but rejected it feeling that she was wrong for the part. The producers so wanted her for a role on the series, however, that they later wrote the role of D'Anna Biers with Lawless in mind.

10. The term "skinjob", used to describe any of the humanoid Cylon models, is a reference to the movie Blade Runner (1982), in which Edward James Olmos also starred (and suggested Tricia Helfer watch to help her prepare) and the Nexus 6 models are described by the same moniker.

9. The combat helmets worn by the Marines are actually Giro "Bad Lieutenant" snowboarder helmets. They're made out of plastic, not Kevlar.

8. Many of the weapons used in the series are actual modern firearms, and not custom props. The Marines often use Heckler & Koch G36 rifles and Beretta CX4 carbines, Anders frequently carries a Heckler & Koch UMP submachinegun and a Desert Eagle pistol, Helo sometimes carries a South African Protecta drum-fed shotgun, and Starbuck sometimes uses a pair of Skorpion vz 61 submachineguns.

7. In the beginning of season 3, Jamie Bamber did not actually gain the weight for the role. Instead, a body double was used for some close-up shots of the rounded tummy, and Bamber wore a jowl-forming brace in his mouth. A few wide shots of his body were cheated out.
